Des Moines is the capital and the most populous city in the U.S. state of Iowa. It is also the county seat of Polk County. A small part of the city extends into Warren County. There were 88,729 housing units at an average density of 1,097.2 per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 76.4% White, 10.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 4.4% Asian . Non-Hispanic Whites were 70.5% of the population in 2010.
